The Havening Techniques® are powerful therapeutic tools that can be used to treat the consequences of encoded traumatic or stressful memories and can help individuals who are not living life to their full potential.
The Havening Techniques® encompass a range of new therapeutic methodologies that have been developed by Dr Ronald Ruden in collaboration with his twin brother Dr Steven Ruden in America over the past three decades. The Havening Techniques® draw on practices derived from Energy Psychology (EP) and ancient Chinese medicine, but utilise current advances in research and understanding of neuroscience into a method for healing.
One of the methods, called Event Havening – more technically: Amygdala Depotentiation Technique (ADT) – alters the response to recalling a traumatically encoded event. It is designed to change the brain chemistry to de-traumatise the memory and permanently remove its negative effects from both our psyche and body. The Havening Techniques® are part of a larger group of therapeutic treatment modalities called Psychosensory Therapies, which use sensory input to affect cognitions, emotions and behaviour. EMDR, Calatonia, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy are also Psychosensory Therapies.
How do Havening Techniques work?
The Havening Techniques® are body-focused methods and as part of their protocol they require the sensory input of human touch as a therapeutic tool. The type of touch used is referred to as Havening Touch® and in our service would be applied by a Havening Practitioner® (either certified or undergoing certification following their completed Havening Training). Havening Touch® involves very gentle stroking touch on arms, hands and face and the client remains fully clothed. Some people, frequently when they have experienced inappropriate touch in the past, may find it difficult to tolerate touch or the physical proximity of a therapist. In this case, Havening Touch® can be learnt and applied by clients themselves and your therapist supports you with structuring the session to help you access the appropriate Havening methodology for your individual needs. You and your therapist would decide how Havening Touch® might best be used for you taking into account your particular circumstances.
There are a variety of different Havening Techniques® and your therapist would decide after a thorough assessment which type of Havening methodology might benefit you and at what point in your therapeutic process it might most suitably be used. This will be different for each client depending on their particular condition and circumstances. Havening Techniques® can be very effective when applied by qualified professionals.
What do Havening Techniques treat?
The Havening Techniques® can be used to diffuse chronic emotional states, to increase psychological well-being and resilience and for the treatment of a wide range of anxiety states, depression, both simple and complex trauma and other distressing conditions, including chronic physical and emotional pain.
Our therapeutic approach at The Cotswold Centre For Trauma Healing is integrative and the Havening Techniques® will be used in conjunction with a wide range of other methodologies and embedded in your individual therapeutic programme if and when you and your therapist decide that this could be helpful to you. All our clients undergo a thorough initial psychological assessment before The Havening Techniques® or any other therapeutic methodology is applied.
